Tanner Houck
Tanner Houck Goes four innings in no-decision
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 4:07 PM
Houck did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 8-4 win over Baltimore, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out six.
Analysis: While Houck was staked to a 4-1 lead after two innings, the right-hander failed to qualify for a win after needing 82 pitches to make it through four frames. It's been a shaky start to the year for Houck, who's now given up seven runs across 9.2 innings in his first two outings. He'll look to get on track in his next start, currently lined up for next week at home against the Blue Jays.
Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman Breaks out Thursday
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 4:02 PM
Bregman went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, two doubles, an additional run scored and three total RBI in Thursday's 8-4 victory over the Orioles.
Analysis: After failing to record an extra-base hit in his first six games this season, Bregman picked up three in the win, including a first-inning homer off Charlie Morton, his first long ball with the Red Sox. The 31-year-old Bregman is now 9-for-31 to start the year after slashing .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBI in 634 plate appearances with the Astros last season.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Not close to rehab assignment
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 11:24 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Yoshida (shoulder) is throwing out to 110 feet but will not be ready for a rehab assignment next week, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Yoshida landed on the 10-day injured list prior to Opening Day while he continues his recovery from right shoulder surgery, and he also dealt with a more recent back issue. The back problem has cleared up, but Yoshida remains limited to playing catch and Cora noted the 31-year-old will have to show he can make throws from the outfield before he's cleared for games. It's uncertain when that might happen, but Yoshida's return is not imminent.
Lucas Giolito
Lucas Giolito Two more rehab outings
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 10:56 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Giolito (hamstring) is "not close" to rejoining the rotation, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Giolito threw 51 pitches over 2.1 innings Wednesday in his first rehab start with Triple-A Worcester and will need at least a couple more rehab outings as he continues to build up. The right-hander is coming back from a strained hamstring and has not made a major-league start since 2023, having missed the 2024 campaign while recovering from an internal brace procedure.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Needs two more rehab starts
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 10:49 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Bello (shoulder) is "not close" to rejoining the rotation, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Bello threw 47 pitches in his first rehab start and is slated to make a second rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Worcester. It would appear he will require at least one additional rehab outing after that as he continues to build up his stamina following a right shoulder injury. Richard Fitts and Sean Newcomb will continue holding down rotation spots for Boston until Bello and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) are ready.
Connor Wong
Connor Wong Taking seat Thursday
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 8:48 AM
Wong is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Baltimore.
Analysis: Wong will be given some rest in Thursday's matinee after he did the catching in Wednesday's night game. Carlos Narvaez will be behind the plate and bat eighth for Boston.
Liam Hendriks
Liam Hendriks Throwing from 120 feet
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 7:32 AM
Hendriks (elbow) threw out to 120 feet Tuesday in Baltimore during Boston's day off, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Boston manager Alex Cora indicated Hendriks is feeling better but is not yet ready for mound work. That could happen at some point this weekend.
Lucas Giolito
Lucas Giolito Makes scoreless rehab start
Thu, Apr 3, 2025, 7:23 AM
Giolito (hamstring) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over 2.1 scoreless innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Analysis: Giolito threw mostly fastballs while adding a healthy dose of changeups and sliders during the start. The right-hander is expected to make at least two more rehab starts before being activated off the 15-day injured list.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Swats first homer
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:32 PM
Story went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Baltimore.
Analysis: Story went deep for the first time in 2025, taking the first pitch he saw over the fence in center field. While all eyes were focused on the historically slow start of teammate Rafael Devers, Story's 2-for-15 start (.133) flew under the radar.
Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers Finally hits
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 10:25 PM
Devers went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Orioles.
Analysis: Devers finally got a break from the frustration, logging his first two hits of the season. HIs fifth-inning double snapped an 0-for-21 run (15 strikeouts). It was the first game of 2025 that Devers did not strike out.
Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman Quiet start to season continues
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:47 PM
Bregman went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Baltimore.
Analysis: Bregman is a quiet 6-for-26 (.231) with zero RBI or extra-base hits to begin his debut season in Boston, which is rather disappointing after he hit .279 with three home runs, three doubles and 10 RBI in 43 at-bats during spring training. Fantasy managers are still in anticipation of the star third baseman's first games this season at Fenway Park, where Bregman is batting a robust .375 (30-for-80) with seven long balls, nine doubles, 15 RBI and 24 runs scored in 21 games for his career at the ballpark.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Notches first save of 2025
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:23 PM
Chapman picked up the save after throwing a scoreless ninth inning with one walk in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Baltimore. He struck out one.
Analysis: Chapman wasn't overly dominant while tossing 18 pitches Wednesday, but he put out Ryan Mountcastle after Adley Rutschman drew a walk to prevent the potential tying run from coming to the plate. It was Chapman's first save of the campaign after he worked the eighth inning on Opening Day against Texas, but his usage in that one was likely a matchup-based move to handle the top of the Rangers' order. The hard-throwing left-hander has a fairly clear pathway to save chances as Boston's closer to begin the season, especially as long as Liam Hendriks (elbow) sits on the injured list.
Garrett Crochet
Garrett Crochet Dominant in eight scoreless innings
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:06 PM
Crochet (1-0) earned the win after throwing eight scoreless innings on four hits and one walk Wednesday against Baltimore. He struck out eight.
Analysis: After throwing five solid innings in his Red Sox debut on Opening Day against Texas, Crochet built on that showing Wednesday by spinning eight shutout frames and scattering four singles for a brilliant performance on the road. The hard-throwing southpaw has allowed just two runs to go with 12 punchouts over 13 innings so far this year. Crochet will look to keep the good times rolling in his next start, which is slated to come at home against Toronto early next week.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Next rehab start coming Sunday
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 2:35 PM
Bello (shoulder) is scheduled to make a second rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Bello wasn't sharp in his first rehab start with Worcester on Tuesday, covering 2.1 innings and striking out five while allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks. Perhaps more importantly, however, Bello emerged from that start without any setbacks with his shoulder, so he'll look to increase his workload after tossing 47 pitches Tuesday. The Red Sox will reassess Bello's next steps after Sunday's outing, but if all goes well, he could return from the 15-day injured list and rejoin the Boston rotation late next week.
Kristian Campbell
Kristian Campbell Inks eight-year contract extension
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:45 PM
The Red Sox signed Campbell to an eight-year, $60 million contract extension Wednesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe relays that the extension contains an $19 million club option for 2033 and a $21 million club option for 2034, so the total value of the deal could reach an even $100 million. The Red Sox locked up Garrett Crochet on a long-term contract earlier this week and now have signed one of their young position players to a contract extension. Campbell, 22, is off to a great start in his major-league career, going 6-for-16 with one home run and a 5:4 K:BB through five games.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Resumes baseball activities
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 2:11 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Yoshida (shoulder/back) has been cleared to resume baseball activities and took approximately 50 swings with a bat Saturday, Chris Cotillo of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Yoshida opened the season on the 10-day injured list while he continues his rehab program for the labral repair surgery he underwent Oct. 3. The 31-year-old was also managing back tightness at the tail end of spring training, but after a brief shutdown period, he's now resumed focusing on rehabbing the shoulder. Yoshida was able to serve as a designated hitter during the Grapefruit League, but he'll need to complete a throwing program and play the outfield in some minor-league rehab games before being activated from the IL. Cora said that Yoshida is feeling better but still not doing any throwing, so Yoshida's season debut doesn't appear to be imminent.
Lucas Giolito
Lucas Giolito Rehab start set for Wednesday
Tue, Apr 1, 2025, 1:22 PM
Giolito (hamstring) is scheduled to make his first rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Giolito is one of two injured Red Sox starters heading out on a rehab assignment with Worcester this week, as Brayan Bello (shoulder) is slated to pitch Tuesday. According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Giolito is expected to cover around three innings Wednesday, and he'll likely make two more rehab starts after that before being activated from the 15-day injured list. The right-hander looks on pace to rejoin the rotation in the second half of April.
Sean Newcomb
Sean Newcomb Struggles in Boston debut
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 9:49 PM
Newcomb (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against Baltimore.
Analysis: All four runs against Newcomb came during an ugly first inning, but he still allowed five more baserunners over the next three frames. He threw 40 of 64 pitches for strikes and forced four whiffs on just five swings against his slurve. Newcomb has not made more than four starts at the MLB level since the 2018 season with Atlanta. He's currently projected to face the Cardinals at home this weekend, but will likely lose his rotation spot once Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) are ready to return sometime this month.
Garrett Crochet
Garrett Crochet Inks six-year extension with Boston
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 8:29 PM
Crochet agreed to a six-year, $170 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Passan notes that this deal won't go into effect until the 2026 season and includes an opt-out clause following the 2030 campaign. Crochet is currently under contract on a one-year, $3.8 million agreement until the end of 2025 and made only one start with Boston before the two sides were able to come together on a long-term contract.
Jarren Duran
Jarren Duran Knocks in three
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 5:37 PM
Duran went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI in Monday's 8-5 loss to the Orioles.
Analysis: Duran tripled home two in the second inning and delivered a runner from second base with a ninth-inning single. Going 2-for-2 with runners in scoring position (3-for-6 overall) makes him a rare bird for the Red Sox this early in the season. Duran has hit safely in four of the first five games, going 6-for-21 with a walk and two steals.
